When we talk about an erotic love story based on a fetish like BDSM, we have to remember that there are two people and two approaches to it. Take the case of Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. There would not be an erotic love story or a BDSM inspired relationship if there was no submissive Ana to a dominant Christian. They are like this perfect foil to each other and almost like his yin to her yang, or vice versa. Hence, when it comes to portraying this subtle difference between who is a dominant partner in the relationship and who is the submissive partner, most of the times the body language of the actors and the expressions matter the most.
“Fifty Shades…” is not a novel, and a film, that merely touches upon these issues, but the characters have been penned in such a way that the relationship tension between them is infectious and is evident in the posters as well. Case in point is the new still or poster which has been released. But just because we have a new poster does not mean that we will forget the old poster! Both the posters are important to analyse this subtle difference between Dakota’s submissive Ana and Jamie’s dominant Grey.
If the first poster celebrated the machismo and the masculinity of Christian Grey, the second poster reminded us of Anastasia’s coyness and vulnerability. For all those who remember seeing the first poster, they will remain that a suited Jamie Dornan (As Christian Grey) standing with his back to us, hands nestled inside the front pockets of his trousers and looking out if the floor to ceiling window in his office at Grey Enterprises. In the novel the setting of all the action is Seattle, and though the film has been shot in Vancouver, in the poster, Grey (Dornan) looks over the Seattle skyline.
The poster reeks of Christian Grey’s love for power and control. It is this controlling streak in him that helps him seduce a naive and shy college graduate Anastasia Steele into becoming his submissive partner. On the other hand, since there cannot be a Christian without Ana, that is, there cannot be a dominant partner without a submissive one; the second poster is a revelation of this complex and emotionally draining relationship that Ana shares with Grey.
In the second poster, which comes with the caption “One Year. Valentine’s Day 2015”, Ana can be seen standing timidly at the entrance of Grey’s cabin/office with a file/paper. A man, presumably Grey is seen again with his back to us. If the first poster carried the option “Mr. Grey Will See You Now”, this poster also seems like a continuation of that thought. Actually, Ana is there on some business, as she has to take the self made entrepreneur’s interview for the college paper. Although she is shown as a student who has majored in English literature, it is her friend and roommate Kate, who was scheduled to take the interview, but was indisposed, in her absence, Ana, slips into her shoes and comes to take Grey’s interview and this chance encounter, changes both their lives.
They have a relationship of When the topic of discussion is the casting rumours of “The Movie Fifty Shades….” you can expect a new twist and turn anytime. First, there was the news that Charlie Hunnam has been cast as Christian Grey in the movie adaptation of the novel trilogy penned by Erica James, and then just as suddenly it had been announced, it was revealed that he had left the project to devote more time to his television show, “Sons of Anarchy”. This news not only left the fans of the franchise and Charlie Hunnam disheartened, but also forced the casting team to look for a suitable substitute.
When talking about the new actor who filled the shoes of Charlie Hunnam, Jamie Dornan, it has to be mentioned that he too is a television actor and has been known for his roles in “The Fall” and “Once Upon a Time”. Initially, the fans of the franchise had a little trouble accepting him as the new Christian Grey, but with a lot of support from his chiselled good looks and Erica James, they have finally warmed up to him. A character like Christian Grey, who is a BDSM fetishist, has many women in his life and the latest one among them is the 21 year old Anastasia Steele whom he seduces and makes his submissive partner.
But the submissive partner before her, Leila, to be played by Katie Cassidy, is also a character to watch out for. When addressing the rumours of her being cast as Leila in the adaptation, at the New York Fashion Week, Katie revealed that she is indeed a fan of the novel and has put all rumours to rest by saying that she will indeed be a part of the franchise on the big screen. Her character in the novel is that of Grey’s submissive partner before he meets Ana.
two and a half years, but she leaves him to be with her husband, who she eventually leaves to be with another boyfriend Geoff, Geoff is incidentally killed in an accident, which drives her to the point of insanity. The role definitely calls for some intense action with Grey and the other men in her life, and for an actor of Katie’s prowess who has been seen in “Taken” and “Gossip Girl”, we are sure it’s just another day at work. It was Erica James, who had broken the news of Katie joining the cast of “Fifty Shades…” and given her proximity to the author, we are sure that she will be the centre of attention once she starts shooting.
With the shooting of “Fifty shades…” already underway in Vancouver, it is any day now that Katie can join Jamie on set and when the two meet, if the script holds such a possibility, we are sure that sparks will fly. To really see if the sparks fly between Jamie and Dakota, who play Christian and Ana, on reel, we have to wait till 13th February 2015.
Jamie Dornan fans will be officially perplexed, sad and angry when they hear that the Irish hunk of an actor is about to leave the “Fifty Shades Movie” project. But to console them only one thing can be said, and that is, the actor is not leaving the movie franchise for good. He will be merely taking a break. The actor, who was primarily known for his television roles in “Once Upon a Time” and “The Fall”, will be taking a break and going to Belfast to reprise his role in “The Fall”.
He will start shooting for the second season of the series and unlike the earlier Mr. Grey; he will not be leaving the venture. But no sooner had the word got out that the former Calvin Klein model was leaving the movie, than everybody started thinking that history was about to repeat itself. In this context, it must be mentioned that any new news regarding the cast of the “Fifty Shades…” movie sparks off a domino effect of rumours because of the incidents that have already happened with the movie adaptation and have left an indelible impression on the movie.
The first time any such cast change rumour was heard was when Charlie Hunnam, who was selected to play the role of Christian Grey, walked out of the venture citing his commitment to his television show “Sons of Anarchy” and now if the actor, who has replaced him as Christian Grey, does the same, it is bound to give the producers and the director and the casting team of the movie adaptation sleepless nights. Though the chances of Jamie Dornan leaving the movie are slim, since he has been shooting for the film since December, one can’t be too sure.
The actor is still in Vancouver, Canada shooting the outdoor scenes with his leading lady, Dakota Johnson while the more racy scenes of this novel inspired film have been reportedly shot indoors with very few crew members in attendance. The actor will be taking a break of 16 weeks to travel to Belfast, where he will then get busy to shoot for “The Fall”. The actor will also be joined by Gillian Anderson shooting for “The Fall”. The actress was finishing up her commitments on the US show “Hannibal”, due to which the filming of “The Fall” had to go through a delay.
The executive producer of the series “The Fall”, Gub Neal was also quoted as saying that they have been talking to the Irish actor for over nine months and it has been confirmed that his “Fifty Shades…” schedule will not affect the shooting of “The Fall” in any way. It is being rumoured that the actor will begin shooting the series in Belfast at the end of January or the beginning of February. We hope that the Jamie Dornan’s 16 week stint in Belfast doesn’t change his mind in any way and he comes back to continue shooting for “Fifty Shades…” so that come February 13, 2015, his fans can happily tag along to theatres to watch him in action.
